A Look At Streaking

Image
Streaking? No, not running naked through public. I'm talking about run streaking. According to Runner's World, "The run streak is designed to keep you running through the busy summer season, and bridge the gap between those late spring races and training for the fall." It continues to explain the run streak by defining, "Run at least one mile per day, every day, starting on Memorial Day (Monday, May 27)  and ending on July 4. That's 39 consecutive days of running."   Now readers take this and extend it all year or over multiple years. There are stories of families taking their kids around the block to get their daily run and family time in. Their kids have set records for the youngest person to complete at least one mile a day at 6, 5 and just about 4 years old. There's another story about a 60 something year old man who hasn't taken a day off for 20 years. Or a story about friends being united through their run streaking in the face of can...

Training to Just Finish - 50k Edition

I'm competitive and I always want to do my best even if I don't win. This competitive nature seeps its way into all areas of my life - road races, playing a game of HORSE with my husband, staff meetings, card games, etc. Sometimes I'm competitive with other people (mostly when I know I can win) but most often I am competitive with myself. I get enjoyment out of winning and doing my best but I want to work on taking it down a notch. I ran a marathon earlier this year in April with the goal of running under 3 hours and 20 minutes. Training this winter was brutal with the weather but I got it all in and did well hitting my paces but come race day I didn't prepare myself well enough for the hill climbing. I came through the half in 1 hour 38 minutes which was right on pace but just fell apart in miles 14-17 pulled it together for a little bit and fell apart again around mile 23 (I included the elevation chart below). I ended up running 3 hours and 24 minutes which wa...

Why is it so Hard to Do What We Already Know?

Image
This is my very first blog post. Ever. Writing hasn't really been my thing. Give me a Chemistry textbook with mathematical equations and a scientific calculator (TI-83 please) and I'm in my zone. So, naturally, coming up with a first blog post was a little intimidating. What do runners want to read about? What can people relate to? And what it came down to is this - why is it so hard to execute what we know is the right thing to do? You could probably extend that beyond health and fitness into our daily lives and the fact that it is so difficult in something like health and fitness probably stems from our human nature, but I'm going to focus in on the health and fitness category and the endless list of rules that we know but tend to ignore and offer my advice on ways to overcome those. 1. Strength Training is Essential for Injury Prevention Why is this one so hard?!?! We know 30 minutes of planks, lunges, squats, push-ups, pull-ups, v-sits, crunches, row boats, deadl...
